Awesome first time ~ Primera vez increíble

I had to work yesterday, I was so happy! I guess most of u don’t know that I work as a tour guide, I just started this current season. It’s a free lance work, so I work only when we get cruise ships and they need me to work. Since I started this season the past three times I had been a trainee, that means there was an official guard on charge and I was there to help and learn the routes for my next time. This time I was supposed to be a trainee again, in the Elqui Valley tour for the second time. I was actually pretty excited about that, I’ve only done Elqui Valley once and it’s an interesting route.
We were supposed to leave at 8:30, me and the guide were ready at 7:30 so we started talking. It was the very first time I had worked with him and hadn’t seen him much around the office. We were talking about my experience at work, he asked me if I felt ready to go on a City Tour by myself soon, and I said yes, since I’ve done that as a trainee twice already and it’s what I studied more during training. Suddenly the boss came to the bus, called me and said “one of the guides for the private tour is no here yet, so if she’s not here by 8:30 I’ll send u, can u do it?” and I said “yes”. When she left I turned around and told Sergio “my and my big mouth”, I had just told him I felt ready to be an official guide but I got very nervous after she said that. Time went by and it was 8:15, we started receiving our passenger and my boss hadn’t told me anything about staying or leaving yet. My stomach ached, I was so nervous I felt I was forgetting my English. When we had all of our passengers on the bus she came and told me “u’r staying”. All I could was smile, give Sergio a “give moral support please” look and get my purse off the bus. The manager told me I was going with Héctor as a driver, whom I already knew cuz I had gone with him on a tour during training, and we would leave at 11. The other private tours left earlier, and I probably can’t remember a longer two and a half hour in my life. Every time me and my boss made eye contact she just gave me this sort of mocking-but-supportive smile.
She came to tell me when it was time for me to go to the stairs of the ship with my sign to wait for my passengers. One of the guys from the ship came to talk to me and wait for the passengers also, we talked a lot since he had also been an exchange student and that helped me loosen up a bit. A nice looking lady came down the stairs and told me she was part of my tour, and that the others were coming right away. I immediately liked her and felt at ease, when the others came down we got on the van and left the port.
Since it was a private tour I had to take them wherever they wanted to go, so we planned our trip and started the tour. We went to visit a vineyard, an on our way there we talked a lot about many things. They seemed very interested on knowing as much as possible about day to day life in Chile, we talked about politics, education, health system, housing, men and women work opportunities, and some other things. The vineyard was great, they gave’em a tour and wine tasting, I got to translate the tour for them and talk about wine and drinking culture in Chile. One of the tourist gave me and Héctor each a bottle of white wine as a present. Then we went to have lunch, and went to La Serena so they would get a chance to see the city.
As we were traveling back to the port I was thinking what a great experience that had been, my first time as an official guide an also my first time in a private tour had been awesome, I couldn’t have asked for a better one. They were very nice people, and had such light in their spirits… I’m very grateful I got the opportunity to go. I told them it had been my pleasure to be their guide and then they had to go back in the ship. I had to go talk to my boss when we got there and when I went back to the van the lady I had met first was already climbing up the stairs to get in the ship, when she saw me go back she sent me a big kiss and hug, and so did I. the other three I got a chance to say good bye and wish they had a good trip.
After that I just couldn’t stop smiling, it’s so good to feel u have been part of others joy, u have been able to make them have a good time and will be in their memories from now on, as they told me. Well… I will sure have them in my memory from now on, and will always think of’em when I hear about their place of origin or have to go on a private tour again. I hope I always get the chance to travel with such nice and interesting people.
It was definitely the most wonderful first time for me =)

Tuve que trabajar ayer, estaba tan feliz! Supongo que la mayoría de ustedes no sabe que trabajo como guía turística, empecé recién esta temporada. Es un trabajo demedio tiempo, así es que trabajo sólo cuando recibimos cruceros y necesitan que trabaje. Ya que empecé esta temporada las últimas tres veces he sido ayudante, eso significa que hay un guía oficial a cargo y que yo estaba ahí para ayudar y aprender la ruta para la próxima vez. Esta vez se suponía que iba a ir de ayudante de nuevo, Al valle del Elqui por segunda vez. De hecho estaba bastante emocionada por eso, solamente he hecho el valle del Elqui una vez y es una ruta muy interesante.
Se suponía que nos íbamos a las 8:30, el guía y yo estábamos listos a las 7:30 así es que nos pusimos a conversar. Era la primera vez que trabajaba con él y no lo había visto mucho por la oficina. Estábamos hablando acerca de mi experiencia en el trabajo, me preguntó si me sentía lista para hacer un City Tour como guía oficial pronto, y le dije que sí, ya que he ido de ayudante dos veces y es lo que más estudiamos mientras estábamos haciendo el curso. De repente la jefa llegó al bus, me llamó y dijo “no ha llegado una de las guías para los tour privados, así que si no ha llegado a las 8:30 te mando a ti, puedes hacerlo?” y yo dije “sí”. Cuando se fue me di vuelta y le dije a Sergio “yo y mi gran boca”, acababa de decirle que me sentía lista para ser guía oficial pero me moría de nervios dp de hablar con la jefa. El tiempo pasaba y eran las 8:15, empezamos a recibir a nuestros pasajeros y la jefa no me había dicho nada sobre ir o quedarme. Me dolía el estómago, estaba tan nerviosa que sentía que se me estaba olvidando el inglés. Cuando teníamos a todos nuestros pasajeros en el bus ella vino y me dijo “te quedas”. Todo lo que pude hacer fue sonreír, darle a Sergio una mirada de “dame apoyo moral por favor” y subir a buscar mi cartera. El jefe me dijo que iba a ir con Héctor de chofer, a él ya lo conozco porque una vez durante el curso había ido en un tour con él, y que nos íbamos a las once de la mañana. Los otros tours privados de había ido más temprano y probablemente no puedo recordar otras dos horas y media más largas en mi vida. Cada vez que tenía contacto visual con la jefa me sonreía de una manera burlona pero dando apoyo.
Me fue a visar cuando era el momento de ir a pararme a las escaleras del barco con mi letrero a esperar a mis pasajeros. Una de las personas del barco vino a conversar conmigo y esperar a los pasajeros también, hablamos un montón ya que él también había sido estudiante de intercambio y eso me ayudó a relajarme un poco. Una señora de aspecto simpático bajó del barco y me dijo que estaba en mi tour y que os otros ya venían. De inmediatote agradó ella y me sentí relajada, cuando bajó el resto nos subimos a la van y salimos del puerto.
Ya que era un tour privado yo tenía que llevarlos a donde quisieran ir, así es que planeamos el viaje y comenzamos nuestro tour. Fuimos a visitar una viña y en el camino hablamos un montón, de muchas cosas. Parecían muy interesados en saber tanto como fuera posible acerca de la vida cotidiana en Chile, hablamos de política, educación, salud, vivienda, oportunidades laborales para hombres y mujeres y algunas otras cosas. La viña estuvo excelente, les hicieron un tour y degustación de vinos. Tuve la oportunidad de traducirles ese tour y conversar de vinos y cultura etílica en Chile. Uno de los turistas nos regaló a Héctor y a mí una botella de vino para cada uno. Después fuimos a almorzar, y fuimos a La Serena para que tuvieran una oportunidad de al menos ver la ciudad.
Mientras íbamos de vuelta al puerto pensaba en lo excelente que había sido esa experiencia, mi primera vez como guía oficial y haciendo un tour privado había sido increíble, no pude haber pedido una mejor experiencia. Eran gente muy agradable y tenían mucha luz en sus espíritus… Estoy muy agradecida de haber tenido la oportunidad de ir. Les dije que había sido para mí un placer ser su guía y después tuvieron que irse al barco. Cuando nos bajamos tuve que ir a hablar con mi jefa y cuando volví a la van la señora que había conocido al principio ya se estaba subiendo al barco, pero desde las escaleras me mandó un beso y un abrazo, y yo a ella. Tuve la oportunidad de despedirme de los otros tres y desearles un buen viaje.
Después de eso no podía dejar de sonreír, es tan bueno sentir que has sido parte de la dicha de otros, que has sido capaz de hacer que lo pasen bien y que estarás en su memoria desde ahora en adelante, como ellos dijeron. Bueno… yo de seguro los tendré en mi memoria desde ahora en adelante, y voy a pensar siempre en ellos cuando escuche alguna noticia de su lugar de origen o tenga que ir en un tour privado de nuevo. Espero tener siempre la oportunidad de viajar con gente tan amable e interesante.
Definitivamente fue la primera vez más maravillosa que pude haber tenido =)
